New Zealand Costs

At last I got over the dread of learning how much I spent on my holiday. As usual I spent more than planned but it wasn't that bad after all.

Accommodation: The most interesting observation is that I've spent as much money in food as I did in accommodation which means that I slept in cheap places except for the single night in LA which contributed to 40% of the accommodation costs. The average price for a hostel dorm room was 11Euros which is almost the equivalent of pitching a tent in a campsite in Ireland.

Activities: The money spent on activities was all money well spent. The most expensive activity was the Sky Dive which was also the best thing I've done in the whole holiday. These are some of the activities with the approximate equivalent price in Euros.

Skydive 145€
Doubtful sound cruise 70€
Whale watching trip 60€
Franz Josef Glacier Tour 60€
Jet boat 50€
Milford sound cruise 30€
Elm Wildlife Tour Dunedin 30€
Karori Wildlife Sanctuary 22€
Zorbing 22€
Thermal wonderland 20€

Food: I could have spent less money on food as I was eating out most of the time (47% of the money spent on food, with an average dinner price of 8 Euros), but then again I was on holiday. I forgive myself for the money spent on snacks (26%) - how could I resist those heavenly pies and strong coffee.

Flights: The flights were much more expensive than I would have liked since I was traveling on standby, but the problems with the terrorist attack in London (see post on the day) set me back 276 Euros a good 36% of the flight costs.

Transport: I knew this was going to be costly. The stray bus tour amounted to 67% of the total transport cost which at first glance appears to be quite costly however when you consider that it covered a two week period it's comes into perspective, with the additional benefit of providing a good environment to meet people. Transport would have probably worked out cheaper if I hired a car with somebody but this wasn’t a feasible option and the peace of mind of having all transport taken care off was comfortable.

Presents: If I were to judge how much I love myself with how much I spent on presents for myself (equipment which includes clothes and self-presents) my psychologist would be proud of me. 43% of this amount was spent on books as I ran out of reading material 4 times during the holiday, and went on a book shopping spree in London. The rest went into memorable souvenirs.

Nightlife: Until I learn how to drink slowly this figure will remain like this.
