Tip 12: Icons in system tray
In Windows XP you can select which items are permanently visible in the system tray and which icons are hidden. With this feature you can for example, make the sound speaker always visible and QuickTime to be hidden when inactive.
To do this, right click on the bottom tool bar and select properties. If you click on customize you can select which icons are displayed and which icons are hidden. You can disable hidden icons altogether by unselecting the "Hide inactive icons" in the properties tab. You can also hide the clock from here, but who'd ever want to do this?
