The October issue of the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication's has a special theme on Social Network Sites (sites ala Facebook, MySpace). The first article by danah m. boyd (all lower case for a reason) and Nicole Ellison, is a good introduction to the topic. It goes back to the development history of social network sites, reviewing some huge failures (Friendster) and the use of different services in different countries.
